"You have probably come across search engine marketing sites advertising submissions to 1,000's of search engines that claim to increase your web site traffic. First of all, there aren't even half that many engines, let alone 1,000's of them.
According to Nielson NetRatings reports of the top 10 search providers, Google gets 59.3% of the searches. Yahoo comes in 2nd with 16.9%. MSN gets 13.3%. Together, that's almost 90% share of searches.
See the actual report at the NetRatings site for the rest of the report, which includes the other major, but not as significant engines. So, you can see how ridiculous the claim of submitting to so many engines. Besides, even submitting to engines doesn't make sense, because the search engine spiders will crawl your web site on their own. Submitting won't get them there any faster. Your main concern should be the 3 major and few minor search engines as part of your marketing campaign to increase web site traffic. Submitting to directories is another story. What's the difference between search engines and directories? Search engines are software containing spiders that crawl through web sites to index in an organized fashion. While directories are not software, but are edited by humans. The only way to get listed in them is by submitting to them. The best route to take is manual submissions as opposed to using automated software. Each directory is unique, having different guidelines that a software alone cannot perform. Your site is submitted to directories relevant to reputable directories as relevant to your business as possible.
You can rest assured that we will not ever link or associate your web site with sites that employ unethical search engine tactics. |
